Older boilers lose efficiency rapidly and parts become impossible to find.
If you are constantly paying for repairs, a replacement is more cost-effective.
A failing pump or scaled-up heat exchanger means your boiler can't cope.
A sign of deep system issues that sometimes require a complete boiler and system replacement.
Get this wrong and you either run out of hot water or pay for more boiler than you need. I size it on the survey, not off the old unit.
Heats water on demand with no cylinder and no loft tank. The right answer for most flats and one or two bathroom houses, and it frees up the airing cupboard.
A 24 to 30 kW unit covers most three-bedroom homes. Up to about three bathrooms a combi still copes if it is specced properly.
Like-for-like swap from £2,100 fitted, usually done in a day.
Works with a hot water cylinder, so several taps and showers can run at once without the pressure dropping away. Best for larger homes, two or more bathrooms, or low mains pressure.
No loft tank needed, everything runs at mains pressure from a sealed cylinder.
From £2,400, quoted after a free survey.
The traditional setup: a hot water cylinder plus a cold feed tank in the loft. Usually kept where the property has older pipework that would not take mains pressure well.
If you are on one of these, converting to a combi is the most common upgrade and it gets the loft back.
Replacements and conversions from £2,400.
Not sure which you have? Send me a photo of the boiler and the airing cupboard on WhatsApp and I will tell you.
Most domestic installs in Southampton land between £2,100 and £3,500. The price moves with the brand you pick, the flue routing, and any system work the install needs.
The survey and the quote are free, and the price is fixed before any work starts. If something unexpected turns up behind the old boiler, you hear about it before I touch it, not on the invoice.

A standard combi-to-combi swap starts at £2,100 including the boiler, flue, fittings and a day's labour. Most domestic installs land between £2,100 and £3,500 depending on brand, flue routing and any system upgrades. System and regular boiler installs start around £2,400 because the cylinder and pipework work varies.
A combi heats water on demand with no tank. A system boiler works with a hot water cylinder, which suits homes running more than one bathroom at once. A regular (heat-only) boiler also needs a cold tank in the loft. Most modern installs are combi or system.
For most three-bedroom homes a 24 to 30 kW combi is right. Larger houses with two bathrooms or high hot-water demand may need 35 kW or a system boiler with a cylinder. I size it properly during the survey rather than just matching the old unit.
Yes. The most common conversions are regular-to-combi, which removes the loft tank, and combi-to-system, which adds a cylinder if you have more than one bathroom. Conversions start around £2,400 and depend on cylinder size and how much pipework needs reworking.
A straightforward like-for-like combi swap is one full day. A conversion or a relocation is typically two days because the cylinder and pipework need rearranging.
Either works. If I supply it you get the warranty registered through me and a better trade price. If you have already bought one, I will just fit it.
Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Baxi and Ideal. Worcester Bosch is the most reliable in my experience, Vaillant the most efficient, Ideal the best value. I recommend based on your home, budget and warranty preference rather than pushing one brand.
Twelve to fifteen years if it is serviced annually. Skipping the service usually halves that and voids the warranty. Most manufacturers offer 7 to 10 year warranties on new installs, longer when a certified installer fits it.
Most manufacturers require the system to be cleaned before a new boiler goes on, otherwise the warranty does not apply. A chemical flush is included as standard; a full power flush is £440 if the system shows heavy sludge.
Usually yes. The flue route and gas supply have to be right, but most flats are fine. I survey before quoting.
Late summer or early autumn. Installers are less busy, lead times are shorter, and you're sorted before the first cold snap. Replacing in January when your old boiler has failed is usually the worst time, emergency installs cost more and choice is limited.
The ECO4 scheme funds boiler replacements for some low-income households or those on means-tested benefits. Eligibility depends on the property's EPC rating and your circumstances. We can talk you through whether you're likely to qualify before you apply.
